Frequently asked questions

What counts as an "opening chapter"?

Your opening chapter is the first 5,000 words of your manuscript, or a natural chapter break — whichever comes first. If your chapters run long, submit up to the 5,000-word mark. If your first chapter is shorter, submit it as written.

Which editor reviews my chapter?

You choose. When you submit, you'll select from Hartley, Oliver, Vera, or Marcus. Each editor has a distinct focus — craft and voice, structure and pacing, market positioning, or reader experience. Not sure which to pick? We'll suggest one based on your genre.

How is this different from beta reading?

A beta reader gives you their personal reaction as a reader. A Quick Read is craft-focused and systematic — it assesses what's happening technically in your prose, structure, and opening hook against the conventions of your genre. No personal opinions, no "I didn't like the main character" — just specific, actionable craft feedback.
