ISBNs in Australia: What They Are, Where to Get Them and Whether You Need One
The ISBN question trips up a significant number of Australian self-published authors. Free ISBNs from publishing platforms look attractive, but they come with trade-offs that matter if you want control over your book's publishing record and access to wider distribution. Here is what you need to know before you make a decision.
What an ISBN Is and What It Does
An International Standard Book Number is a 13-digit identifier assigned to a specific edition of a book. Every distinct format of a title needs its own ISBN: the print edition, the ebook and the audiobook are each separate products requiring separate ISBNs. The ISBN system is used by retailers, libraries, distributors and booksellers worldwide to identify and order books.
The ISBN record lists a publisher of record. This is the entity whose name appears in global book databases as the publisher of the title. This is where free platform ISBNs and your own ISBNs diverge significantly.
Free Platform ISBNs vs Your Own
| Feature | Free Platform ISBN (e.g. KDP) | Your Own Thorpe-Bowker ISBN |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | AUD $44 (single) or $88 (ten) |
| Publisher of record | The platform (e.g. Independently Published on KDP) | You or your imprint name |
| Portability | Tied to that platform only | Usable on any platform or distributor |
| Bookstore access | Very limited; most bookshops will not order | Full access through IngramSpark and other distributors |
| Library ordering | Very limited | Standard ordering through Ingram and library suppliers |
| Brand control | Platform brand appears in publisher field | Your imprint or name appears as publisher |
Where Australian Authors Get ISBNs: Thorpe-Bowker
In Australia, ISBNs are issued exclusively through Thorpe-Bowker, the official ISBN agency for Australia. You purchase ISBNs directly at myidentifiers.com.au. There is no government subsidy or free allocation for self-publishers.
If you are planning to publish more than one book, buying a block of ten ISBNs significantly reduces the per-unit cost. Each format of each title needs its own ISBN, so a single book with a print and ebook edition requires two ISBNs minimum.
Setting Up Your Publisher Imprint
When you register your ISBNs with Thorpe-Bowker, you enter a publisher name. This is what will appear in the global Books in Print database and in retailer and library records. You do not need a registered company to use a publisher name. Many solo self-publishers use a simple business name or trading name as their imprint.
If you want to use a business name, you can register one with ASIC for a nominal annual fee. This is not legally required to publish under a name but it does give the imprint a cleaner professional appearance and protects the name from being registered by someone else in your state.
Do Ebooks Need ISBNs?
Ebooks are not legally required to have an ISBN in Australia, and Amazon KDP does not require one for ebook publication. However, some retailers (Apple Books, Barnes & Noble) do require an ISBN for ebook listing. Draft2Digital, which distributes to these platforms, can provide a free ISBN for ebook distribution. If you want your own ISBN on the ebook, you purchase one from Thorpe-Bowker and assign it at upload.
A practical approach for most authors: Buy a block of ten ISBNs from Thorpe-Bowker. Assign one to your print edition and one to your ebook. Use the remaining eight for future titles or additional formats. This gives you full control at AUD $8.80 per ISBN at the ten-pack rate.
ISBN and Legal Deposit
Under the Copyright Act 1968, published books must be deposited with the National Library of Australia and relevant state libraries. This requirement applies to self-published books. Having your own ISBN and publisher name makes this process cleaner, as the title is registered under your name in the national records rather than under a platform's name.
If you use a KDP free ISBN: You cannot transfer that ISBN to IngramSpark or any other distributor. If you later want to distribute through Ingram for bookstore access, you will need to obtain a new ISBN and re-upload your files. This creates two separate ISBNs for the same book edition, which causes catalogue complications. Obtaining your own ISBN before publishing avoids this entirely.
